Eating your Elephant while making your bed!

In life we are faced with tasks or goals that can seem overwhelming. It’s our belief, at times, that we are helpless against these overwhelming odds. But any large goal or task can be achieved with less stress and less anxiety by breaking it down into smaller tasks.

There is a saying, "How do you eat an elephant? One small bite at a time."

The same can be said about goals that seem overwhelming. What is one small step that you can take right now that will chip away at that large goal or task?

Waking up in the morning and facing a tough day ahead? Not feeling the start of your day? Don't want to get up and face reality? Start by accomplishing something small. A completed small task will give you a sense of accomplishment. That one small task completed will help to change your mindset and get you a sense of accomplishment. It can motivate you to do more and more small tasks on the path to your ultimate goal.

Break down your large and overwhelming goals into manageable chunks and feel the difference it can make. Eat your elephant one bite at a time.

In the words of Naval Adm. William H. McRaven,

“If you want to change the world, start by making your bed.”

The following are the remarks by Naval Adm. William H. McRaven, ninth commander of U.S. Special Operations Command, at the University-wide Commencement at The University of Texas at Austin on May 17 2014.
